Fuel Saving Tips.

from the Carrsmith Service Department

What are some inexpensive ways I can increase my fuel economy?

Keep you car in good running condition: Poor running engines waste fuel. Bring it in and find out what the problem is. Don't drive your car with Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated, or a rough running engine. Engine parts like bad oxygen sensors can cause your MIL to come on, and can cause poor fuel economy.  If your MIL is on just ask us and we will check your code for free and let you know if it has anything to do with your oxygen sensor. See http://www.carrsmith.com/car_tips/check_engine_light.htm for more information on MILs. Inexpensive parts like fuel filters and air filters can increase fuel economy, too.

Make sure your gas cap is on tight: It is estimated 147 million gallons of gasoline are lost in the U.S. yearly due to vaporization. A loose, or otherwise improperly sealing gas cap will cause your MIL to illuminate. If your MIL is on just ask us and we will check your code for free and let you know if it has to do with fuel vaporization. See http://www.carrsmith.com/car_tips/check_engine_light.htm for more information on MILs.

Drive less: When you can, try to ride a bike or walk. Consolidating trips may also make it possible for you to drive less.

Plan your route in advance: When you do drive, know where you are going. Plan your trips using MapQuest or some other map or some other online service so you are able to take the most direct route, and won't get lost.

Keep you tires properly inflated: Properly inflated tires reduce rolling resistance and friction allowing you to go further on a gallon of gas.

Don't carry extra weight in your vehicle: Clean out your trunk. Store your bowling ball, dumbbells, and other things you don't need to carry with you at home.

Reduce air resistance: Take unused bike racks, luggage racks, etc create wind resistance that eats up fuel..

Buy gas before the holiday: Doesn't it seem like gas prices are the same all week before the holiday and then they jump up overnight.

Buy gas during the cooler part of the day: Gasoline is measure from the pump by volume. However, it actually is slightly denser when the ambient temperature is cooler.

Be careful when topping off your tank: Don't try to fill it up too much because fuel might blow back out of the filler neck.
